Signs of a Cavity: What You Should Know

Cavities don't always cause toothaches right away. Learn the early warning signs of tooth decay before it turns into severe pain.

Dental cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Detecting them early allows for small, conservative composite fillings before the nerve becomes infected. ### Common Signs of a Cavity: - **Tooth Sensitivity:** A sharp twinge when consuming hot coffee, cold ice cream, or sweet foods. - **Spontaneous Toothache:** Pain that occurs without any apparent cause, especially when biting down. - **Visible Pits or Dark Spots:** Brown, black, or chalky white spots on the chewing surface of teeth. - **Food Frequently Trapped:** If floss or food suddenly starts catching in a specific spot between teeth.
